During the opening of the 2014 session of the Economic and Social Council, H.E. Mr. Carlos Enrique Garcia Gonzalez, Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations, was elected ECOSOC Vice-President from the Latin American and Caribbean States Group. Ambassador Gonzalez, along with other United Nations officials present, resolved to reinforce the new organizational and institutional structure of the Council, which aims to mobilize the goals and objectives of the Post-215 Development Agenda.
The importance of the newly reformed structure of ECOSOC was affirmed by Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, during the opening of the session, who stated his desire to deepen the council’s role in all aspects of development. H.E. Mr. Martin Sajdik, Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations and newly elected President of ECOSOC, also vowed to continue to advance the Council’s role in the facilitation of dialogue between Member States on sustainable development issues.
2014 marks the start of a new High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which will focus on policy creation and recommendation revolving around the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic development, social development, and environmental protection. It was proposed that the Council’s focus this year will be on strengthening partnerships with civil society, academia and the private sector.
