On 30 March, 2015, the High-Level Interactive Dialogue on “Water for Life” took place at UN Headquarters in New York, where participants reviewed achievements, challenges and lessons learned in the implementation of the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015.
The interactive dialogue featured participation from Member States, UN Agencies and representatives of the civil society and private sector as they discussed the application of best practices for sustainable water management within the post-2015 development agenda.
H.E. Mr. Einar Gunnarsson, Permanent Representative of Iceland to the United Nations, spoke on behalf of H.E. Mr. Sam Kutesa, President of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, stressing that the theme of water sustainability is both important and timely in the scope of the post-2015 development agenda negotiations, as many of the overarching themes, such as poverty eradication, peace and security and sanitation, are also dependent on the fulfillment of the global demand for access to clean water.
H.E. Mr. Sirodjidin Aslov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, stressed setting ambitious targets in order to achieve sustainable water objectives. The mobilization and allocation of investments, technology, human resources and capacity through global partnership is at the center of the implementation of “Water for Life” and international water cooperation as a whole.
The day also featured UN Water’s Best Practices Awards Ceremony and the opening of the “Water for Life Voices” exhibit, featuring views of citizens across the globe whose communities have been directly impacted by access to quality water. Arranged by organizations associated with UN Water, including UNICEF, UNESCO, UN DESA, as well as the governments of Tajikistan, Korea and Spain, the new exhibit portrays photo stories of persons whose lives have been positively impacted by water projects and better management of resources.
The International Decade of Action on “Water for Life” was launched in 2005 in recognition of the challenges faced in achieving the sustainable development and management of water resources. In December of 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Life’, 2005-2015. The High-Level Interactive Dialogue served as a comprehensive review of the progress achieved so far, and an identifier of what still needs to be completed. The event will be followed the High-Level Conference to review the implementation of the International Decade for Action, ‘Water for Life’, 2005-2015, which will be held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 9-10 June, 2015.
