The South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development’s (SS-SCSD) third annual High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation for Sustainable Development took place in Hong Kong under the theme, “South-South Cooperation, ICT, and Financing for Sustainable Development.” Ambassadors, UN officials, high-level government officials, and members of the private sector convened to discuss the role of South-South and triangular cooperation for development.
The forum was supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the United Nations Public Administration Network (UNPAN), and the International Organization for South-South Cooperation (IOSSC), with the unified purpose of bringing together high-level members of the public and private sectors to highlight the importance of partnership building for sustainable development.
Dr. John W. Ashe, President of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly and Chair of SS-SCSD, underlined the continuing work of the Steering Committee, its pivotal role of uniting public and private interests, and the role of South-South, triangular cooperation and ICT for development towards the post-2015 development agenda.
The forum featured contributions from government and United Nations officials, ministers, ambassadors, development experts and global business icons in the spirit of public-private partnership and multi-stakeholder collaboration, a staple of the Steering Committee’s strategy. Participants examined the vast amount of untapped resources, in terms of innovation, creativity, knowledge, expertise and ICT tools within civil society and private sector that, if properly managed by governments, can produce effective solutions for sustainable development.
Mr. Cai Esang, Chairman of SS-SCSD Asia-Pacific Committee and the South-South Asia-Pacific Finance Center, conveyed an innovative view and new proposals on the methods that the international community is exploring in order to promote social development and establish new means of cooperation.
The forum added to the ongoing work of SS-SCSD as it continues to promote the cause of South-South Cooperation, ICT, and financing for development. The outcome of the forum will contribute to the General Assembly’s high-level event on the importance of South-South, triangular cooperation and ICT for development later this spring.
