The High-Level Conference on the Implementation of the International Decade for Action, “Water for Life”, 2005-2015 took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 9-10 June, 2015, following a decade of international efforts to find solutions to water-related issues.
The Conference, which was organized by the Republic of Tajikistan, and sponsored by the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development (SS-SCSD) and United Nations Agencies including UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO and many others, brought together a wide range of stakeholders responsible for making important advances in the areas of partnerships, programs and strategies for ensuring access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. High-level attendees included Heads of State and Government, Ministers, Ambassadors, UN Officials and influential private sector leaders.
Preceding the conference on June 8th, was a ceremony in which heads of the South-South Steering Committee for Sustainable Development (SS-SCSD) officially presented a laptop donation to the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The donation ceremony, titled “One Laptop One Dream” aims to make technological resources available to strengthen classrooms and educational institutions in developing countries worldwide.
Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, summarized the overall goals of the Conference in saying that water is essential everyday and in almost every way for basic development activities. Access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene represents some of the highest development priorities of countries worldwide.
The High-Level Conference on the Decade for Action “Water for Life” also featured a series of bilateral meetings that took place in order to further the Conference’s discussions with the participation of stakeholders and experts across various sectors.
